Waste treatment BREF

EU procedure to define Best Available Technique for waste treatment in pipeline

In autumn 2011 the EU Commission will start their work to recast the reference document waste treatment which belongs to the Industrial Emission Directive (former IPPC). At the moment the search for the BREF author still starts.
However some EU member states are preparing their national position papers for the recast of the reference document. Especially the inclusion of shredder technologies for scrap cars and electrical and electronical equipment is a new topic to be discusses in the future European working group.
The best available technique in Europe is not even similar. A basic question is which technologies are available at the market, which technologies are the mostly operated ones and which ones are emerging technologies. The answer diverges between European member states.
The technologies mentioned in the waste treatment BREF are:
• Physico-chemical treatment
• Biological treatment
• Mechanical treatment (includes also alternative fuels, treatment of scrap and ashes and slag)

The position of the operating companies and the suppliers sometimes disperses. Therefore a strong common position of the suppliers could be indispensable in 2011.
